While electromagnetic fields (EMFs) occur naturally, the development of man-made electricity and rapid technological progress over the past century have multiplied their sources and diversified their characteristics. Exposure to man-made sources of EMFs has therefore increased dramatically due to the demand for electricity, wireless technologies (especially for telecommunications), and changes in work practices and social behaviour. As a result, all EU citizens are now exposed to EMFs through sources such as high-voltage power lines, household electrical appliances, computers, radar, radio and television broadcast facilities and mobile telephones ... In view of the persistent high level of public concern and the sustained media coverage of this issue, a first Eurobarometer on electromagnetic fields was commissioned in 2006 (EB66). In view of the many scientific, technological and policy developments since then, it was felt that a new Eurobarometer, asking mostly the same questions, would deliver valuable information on trends in the level of public concern. This time, a new question was also included to identify the views of the EU public on the role that the Commission should take in this field. This report analyses the 2010 survey results both in terms of average figures across the 27 Member States and for individual countries. Where major changes have occurred over the last four years, it also brings them to the reader's attention. In addition, it analyses the way the answers vary according to the respondents' socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender etc.) and a number of other indicators.
